Northern Ireland has a long tradition of antique and collectors fairs, from one-day markets in church halls to larger weekend events with dealers travelling from across Ireland. They're one of the best ways to find furniture, jewellery, ceramics and collectables with real history, often at better prices than you'll find in a shop.
What happens at an antique fair?
An antique fair brings together independent dealers under one roof, each with their own stall. Some specialise, in militaria, jewellery or records for example, while others bring a general mix. You pay a small entry fee, browse at your own pace, and buy directly from the dealer. Most dealers are happy to chat about where a piece came from and what makes it special, even if you're not buying.
What can you find at antique fairs in Northern Ireland?
Every fair is different, but you'll typically find a mix of Irish and British antiques alongside vintage and retro pieces. At our fairs in Bangor, that has included:
- Furniture: Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian pieces through to mid-century modern classics.
- Jewellery & Accessories: Vintage and antique jewellery, silver and period accessories.
- Ceramics & Glass: Pottery, porcelain, glassware and decorative arts from Ireland and beyond.
- Militaria: Medals, badges, uniforms and documented military history.
- Breweriana: Pub mirrors, advertising signs, bottles and brewery memorabilia.
- Collectables: Rare finds and treasured pieces spanning decades of history.
- Weird & Wonderful: Curiosities, oddities and conversation pieces that defy easy categorisation.
- Musical Instruments: Vintage and antique instruments, from fiddles to brass.
- Records, Books & Ephemera: Vinyl, rare editions, postcards, maps and printed paper.
- Clocks & Timepieces: Mantel clocks, wall clocks, pocket watches and wristwatches.
Tips for buying at an antique fair
- Arrive early. The best pieces often go in the first hour, especially furniture and anything unusual.
- Bring cash. Many dealers take cards, but not all, and cash can help when agreeing a price.
- Ask questions. Dealers know their stock. Ask about age, origin, repairs and anything you’re unsure of.
- Check condition. Look for chips, cracks, restoration and replaced parts, and check hallmarks and makers’ marks where relevant.
- Be polite about price. A reasonable offer is usually welcome, particularly if you are buying more than one item.
- Measure before you buy. For furniture, bring measurements of your space and think about how you’ll get it home.
On The Square Antique Fair, Bangor
Our fair is held at On The Square Emporium, 79 Cootehall Road, Bangor, County Down. It's a short drive from Belfast along the A2, with free parking on site, and brings together dealers from across Northern Ireland and the rest of Ireland. Previous fairs have also included a bouncy castle, face painting, fairground games and a food truck, so it makes a good family day out.
